Make it easier than ever for teachers to incorporate the activities into their lesson plans.
The Kids Voting Classroom Activities are of the same high quality and engaging nature that teachers have come to expect. The activities focus upon developing students’ critical thinking, information-gathering, decision-making skills and also encourages group discussion.
The new activities will be correlated to the national and state curriculum standards for social studies, and are designed to address civic learning objectives.
WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE?
The Kids Voting Classroom Activities are divided into two sections – K-8 and 9-12. Within the K-8 section, there are three grade-level divisions (K-2, 3-5 and 6-8).
Each section includes:
Educator’s Guide
Classroom Activities
There is also an Additional Resources component that includes an appendix containing information relevant to the activities, bibliography and glossary.
WHAT’S NEW?
The Elections theme remains at the core of the Kids Voting USA Classroom Activities. To accommodate teacher requests for activities that are appropriate and relevant throughout the school year, three additional themes and supporting activities are now included.
They are:
Suffrage: The right to vote and its history.
Democracy: The rights and responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen.
Active Citizenship: How to participate in a democracy, outside of the voting booth.
Each theme contains the following elements:
An introduction, including the intent of the theme and the main learning objectives that the activities support.
General activities which address specific civic learning objectives within the theme.
Overarching questions to stimulate thinking and discussion for each main learning objective.
A literature connection activity that aligns a piece of literature with a civic learning objective.
A culminating activity which builds upon and effectively summarizes all of the main learning objectives within the theme.
Many of the civic learning classroom activities reinforce the work teachers are doing with their students in reading, writing and math.
HOW ARE THE KIDS VOTING CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES USED?
Teachers choose the appropriate grade level (K-2, 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12), and can then choose activities based on theme.
Additional tools and indexes in the Educator’s Guide help teachers find activities based on disciplines and skills, as well as other categories.
Most activities are relatively short (a class period or less) so that they easily complement teachers’ existing lesson plans.
The resources offer great flexibility of use. Teachers can use a few activities at a specific time of year or can thoroughly investigate a theme over a longer period of time.
WHAT FORMATS ARE AVAILABLE?
The Classroom Activities will be available in hard copy or CD-ROM and accessible via the internet. Districts will complete a needs survey to determine the quantity of curriculum needed. Additionally, districts will be asked to provide information about who within their district received a copy of the materials.
